Eastern Standard Time (USA)

The initial idea was simple: take the recipe used to create Ska music in 1960’s Jamaica, namely fusing Caribbean rhythms with Soul and Jazz, and apply it to modern times. Thus Eastern Standard Time was born. Be Bop runs trace their way across a hot, syncopated island rhythm, blue notes waft over Buru shuffles, soulful singing is buoyed by pulsating off beats and the spirit of smoky juke joints merges with the essence of Kingston’s dance halls.

The band took an immediate place in the American Ska scene after its formation in 1995. From word of mouth alone Eastern Standard Time were able to undertake a successful US and Canadian tour even before the release of their first major recording.

Their debut full-length album, Second Hand, was credited by the media as being one of the most groundbreaking records in Ska-oriented music and received numerous accolades from the critics. Released in 1997, it featured such songs as “Oh No,” “Mad Dog,” “Richard Bruce” and “Tick Tock,” all of which received regular radio airplay. Second Hand showcased the formidable talents of the band’s own musicians, but also featured such prominent guests as The Sledge (Toasters, Illinois Jacquet), Sam Turner (Lionel Hampton, James Brown), Coolie Ranx (Pilfers, Toasters) and Go-Go legend Chuck Brown. The success of Second Hand led to numerous tours of the United States, Canada, Europe and Great Britain where the band performed in venues as varied as intimate Jazz clubs, theaters, festivals, halls and even in a stolen circus tent.

The band’s latest release, Time is Tight, was released on Germany’s Grover Records in Fall of 2001 and went into a second pressing within less than a month of its initial release. Recorded in analog with a unique combination of vintage and ultramodern equipment, this is their finest recording to date. Though firmly rooted in the traditions of Ska and Jazz, this disc occasionally pushes the combination into new directions. It features thirteen tunes which capture the band’s soulful side, yet show that they have not forgotten the snappy numbers that keep feet moving on the dance floor.

Eastern Standard Time’s performances are truly events and their varied repertoire has proven that they can play to virtually every audience and, more importantly, get them on their feet and dancing. Whether on their own or as a support act, Eastern Standard Time has proved that they can bring the house down, time and time again.
